Hi mom's it's Daniel Gauss the lactation consultant. I wanted to jump on here for a hot second to kind of record a little bit of information about what to do in the you know this pandemic with breastfeeding.
I snuck out to the car because it's quiet here and I have teenage daughters who are super bored.
So let's talk about what to do cuz I have a lot of Mama's contacting me really concerned if I have it we’re asymptomatic do I keep breastfeeding should I wear a mask excetera excetera.
So we don't know a whole lot about the virus, we do know that it spreads quickly and we know that it is super contagious, but there is not a more important time then now to continue to breastfeed, and here’s why.
So breastmilk is a superpower, no joke, it's full of tons of leukocytes and it has digestive enzymes in it and of course it has the live hormones that we need. It also is full of anti-bacterial and anti-viral enzymes as well, so but it's specific to your baby. Here's what I mean by that.
When your baby's saliva absorbs into your breast when they latch on, your body will react to that. Meaning if your baby on a normal day was low on protein or fats it would absorb and know that hey I need to up my fat protein ratio to help this kiddo. That’s why you will see breastmilk turning different colors. If the baby is sick your body is going to react to that and create leukocytes to fight that, so it's almost like a specific antidote if you will to whatever the baby needs because of that you and your baby are still super protected and super-connected so your baby's going to end up being healthier.
That being said, I have a lot of families also asking can I relactate during this time for that very reason, absolutely you can. If your breasts have done this before they can do it again, so it will not be a full supply, but you can absolutely relactate in order to provide protection for your kids in smoothies if you need to for any of their ages as well.
I have a very immune compromise kid, I myself am immune compromised, so this has made for an interesting adventure. She's home right now with a feeding tube. A lot of you saw her story before, so that being said, if you have questions about relactating, if you have questions about how our body works during this time, hit me up, follow me here on Instagram, watch my YouTube channel, and I'll make sure you get to all those questions that you need to have done, all right.
Now for you pumping moms you're not alone, just take a little bit of the baby’s spit, put it on your nipple, your body will absorb and react to that as well and create its own little immunity for that virus also.
All right guys stay safe, stay home, say quarantine, we're going to get through this together bye
